Two Women to Face Off in West Virginia House Race
Anne Barth, a first-time candidate for the House of Representatives, won the Democrat primary last night in West Virginia. She won by a margin of about 2-1, reports the Charleston Gazette. She had been the state director for Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia for 21 years prior to running for office herself.
Barth supports ending the Iraq war and expanded health care, including allowing the government to negotiate drug prices under Medicare. She is endorsed by several unions, including both the West Virginia Federation of Teachers and the West Virginia Education Association.
Barth will be running against Representative Shelley Moore Capito, who is supported by the Wish List, a women's political action committee dedicated to getting pro-choice Republican women elected. Capito, however, voted for the federal ban on an abortion procedure, which anti-reproductive rights activists call "partial-birth abortion."
Barth has received support from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senator Byrd, and Representative Nick Rahall of West Virginia.
